Israel’s Defense Ministry has signed a NIS 100 million ($34 million) agreement with Elbit Systems subsidiary Cyclone to develop and integrate external fuel tanks for the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter jet fleet.
The new system, based on a Cyclone design originally developed for F-16 aircraft, is expected to significantly extend the operational range of Israel’s F-35I “Adir” stealth fighters. Defense officials say the upgrade will reduce dependence on aerial refueling aircraft while increasing flexibility during long-range strike missions.
The deal comes as Israel continues preparing for potential large-scale regional operations that could require deep-strike capabilities against distant targets across the Middle East.
The F-35I Adir is considered one of the most advanced fighter aircraft in the Israeli Air Force, combining stealth technology, intelligence gathering, electronic warfare capabilities, and precision strike systems.
