Lebanon’s government has formally classified Hezbollah’s military wing as illegal, marking a historic and dramatic shift in the group’s status—from a so-called “resistance” movement to a banned armed organization.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced that all military and security activities by Hezbollah are now strictly prohibited.
The government ordered the group to disarm immediately and limit itself to political activity only. Lebanese security forces have been instructed to prevent rocket and drone launches and arrest those responsible.
The Lebanese army has reportedly begun detaining Hezbollah operatives suspected of illegal weapons possession, while the government has also expelled Iranian Revolutionary Guard personnel from the country, with over 150 Iranian nationals—including diplomats—said to have left.
