The "flying palace" Qatar wants to give US President Trump has grabbed headlines (and rightly so), but the bigger story from a strategic perspective is what Qatar will get from Trump.
This can be learned from what US Ambassador Timmy Davis stated today, according to which the parties will sign agreements in the areas of defense and security, among other things.
A new defense agreement between the parties means deepening the strategic partnership, since it is expected to include expanding defense cooperation, the sale of advanced weapons systems to Qatar, and an American commitment to increasing security support for Qatar.
A defense agreement will strengthen the status of Al-Adid base, the largest American base in the region, which Qatar hosts. As part of the agreement, Qatar will purchase 8 attack drones in a deal worth approximately $2 billion. The deal also includes associated armaments and advanced control systems and strengthens Qatar's defense capabilities.
