A new national survey reveals that a majority of Democrats say they would vote for a ‘Democratic Socialist,’ view Socialism ‘favorably’
Sixty-two percent of Democratic voters said they would vote for a candidate who openly identified as a “Democratic Socialist,” while just 11% said they would not. Among self-described liberals, support climbed to 73%, according to the Economist/YouGov survey.
The poll also found that 58% of Democrats view socialism favorably. When asked to choose between the two economic systems, 34% selected socialism, compared with only 22% who chose capitalism.
The findings reflect a major ideological transformation inside the Democratic Party, where socialist politicians and policies once considered too radical for mainstream American politics are rapidly gaining acceptance. The rise of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other socialist-backed candidates suggests this shift is already reshaping Democratic primaries and the party’s future direction.
