Uganda is set to place a statue at Entebbe International Airport honoring Yonatan Netanyahu, the commander of the elite Israeli unit that carried out the daring 1976 hostage rescue known as Operation Entebbe.
Netanyahu, the older brother of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, led the assault force that freed more than 100 hostages held by terrorists at Uganda’s Entebbe Airport. He was the only Israeli soldier killed during the mission and has since become a national hero in Israel.
The operation unfolded after an Air France flight was hijacked and diverted to Entebbe, where the terrorists separated Israeli and Jewish passengers from the rest. In a dramatic overnight raid, Israeli commandos flew more than 2,500 miles to Uganda, stormed the terminal, eliminated the terrorists, and rescued the captives.
