President Donald Trump announced that the Republican Party will hold its first-ever midterm convention, a two-day event set for Dallas on September 9–10, ahead of the November congressional elections.
Trump called the event historic and said it would celebrate what he described as the “Great American Comeback.” The convention is expected to focus on the America First agenda, Republican economic messaging, border security, job growth and the party’s effort to hold control of Congress.
The move is unusual because national conventions are normally held during presidential election years, not ahead of midterms. But Trump and the GOP are clearly treating the 2026 races as a national referendum on his second-term agenda.
Trump is expected to address the gathering, turning the Dallas convention into a major campaign event designed to energize the Republican base and frame the midterms as a fight over whether his agenda continues or gets blocked by Democrats in Congress.
