Media and citizens in Iran discussed the potential involvement of Russia and Syria in providing intelligence to Israel regarding the location of Revolutionary Guards officers before last week's precise attack in Damascus.
Speculations arise amid calls by hard-line Iranian officials for a quick and decisive response to the Israeli attack on April 1, which targeted the Iranian consulate in Damascus and resulted in the death of two senior generals in the IRGC's Quds Force and five other officers.
Meanwhile, senior Iranian military commanders have maintained their position that Iran will retaliate at a time it chooses.
On the other hand, reports in some Arab media indicate that Iran may refrain from retaliating against Israel if Israel abandons the attack on Rafah in its conflict with Hamas.
In an editorial on April 8, Massiah Mohajri, the influential managing editor of the daily Jumhouri Islami, a newspaper founded by Ali Khamenei in 1979, asked: "Why does Russia, which controls Syrian airspace, not prevent airstrikes on Iranian targets in Syria? "
"We have had too many losses in Syria during the past months and it is definitely because of the betrayal of those who managed to infiltrate our ranks," he said.
Since December, Israel has killed 18 senior Revolutionary Guards officers in Syria, in what appears to be a systematic campaign to reduce the activity of Iranian emissaries within its borders. Almost all the generals and officers of the Revolutionary Guards stationed in Syria and Lebanon are designed to coordinate operations of Afghan, Iraqi, Syrian and Lebanese proxy forces.
"We have warned about this repeatedly over the past months, but no one seems to have heeded the warnings. Have Iranian officials ever asked themselves why such strikes never occur against Russian forces in Syria and why Russia's advanced air defenses do not prevent Israel's crimes against Iran?"
