The fall of Bashar Assad’s regime dominated Israeli headlines, calling the collapse an “earthquake” on Sunday morning while images of celebrating Syrians, gunmen raising their rifles, and statues being toppled filled the papers.
“The fall of the Assad regime is a historic earthquake in the Middle East,” wrote Israel’s popular Walla! news site.
“Earthquake: Assad fled Syria,” topped the website of Maariv as the rebels announced the collapse of the government. A second headline said, “Revolutionary Guards admit defeat: ‘The fall of Iran’s Berlin Wall.'”
“The rebels entered Damascus and declared: ‘We have overthrown the regime.'” and “Report: ‘Assad fled, his plane disappeared from the radar'” topped the Ynet News website.
At the top of the Times of Israel website, “Rebels declare Damascus captured in stunning end to Assad family rule in Syria,” followed by “[Israeli army] deploys in Golan buffer zone with Syria, girding for post-Assad regime chaos.
Reports looking back on Assad’s rule, such as the Kan public broadcaster asked, “How did an ophthalmologist become a cruel dictator?”
At N12, a commentary by veteran journalist Ehud Yaari simply said, “Assad’s fall is a resounding victory against the entire Iranian axis.”
