Germany’s defense minister Boris Pistorius said his country will not take part in efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz following a request from President Trump for NATO allies to assist the United States in ensuring freedom of navigation in the critical waterway.
Speaking about the request, the German minister stated bluntly: “This is not our war. We did not start it.”
The comment highlights growing tension between Washington and some European allies as the conflict with Iran intensifies and the security of the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes — becomes a central strategic concern.
The United States has been urging allies whose economies depend on Gulf energy supplies to contribute naval forces to protect commercial shipping and keep the strait open.
