Daily Beast reporter Roger Sollenberger reveals that Republican Congressman Cory Mills was married at the Dar al-Hijrah mosque by an imam named Hanooti—previously reported to have raised funds for Hamas and linked to the Muslim Brotherhood in the U.S.
The mosque was also once home to radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, known for his involvement in terrorist plots.
The current imam at the mosque expressed surprise, saying he had never heard of a non-Muslim man being married in a Muslim ceremony at a mosque unless he had converted or deception was involved. Mills claims he is Christian.
Mills’ wife, Rana al-Saadi, is an Iraqi interpreter and co-partner with him in a weapons company called PACEM. A year after the marriage, PACEM signed a major arms deal with Iraq. Notably, Hanooti’s son was convicted of spying for Saddam Hussein.
Sollenberger also reports that Mills failed to disclose business ties in Dubai to House ethics officials.
Mills has not responded to questions from the Daily Beast. He is currently returning from Syria, where he met with the country’s president and foreign minister to discuss sanctions.
