Finally good news for Egypt. Suez Canal revenues in January 2023 recorded the highest monthly figure in its history - 802 million dollars. This broke the record set in August 2022 by more than $56 million.
The head of the Suez Canal Authority, Osama Rabia, stated in a statement published today that the average daily rate of passage in January reached about 70 ships. Traffic in the Suez Canal during January 2023 reached 2155 ships in both directions, compared to the passage of 1774 ships during the same month last year.
The total net weight of goods passing through the canal also jumped to 123.5 million tons, compared to 106.2 million tons in January 2022.
The Suez Canal is one of the four important sources of foreign exchange for the Egyptian economy along with tourism, the export of natural gas and income from Egyptian workers abroad.
