Iran's Minister of Communications and Information Technology revealed that during the 12-day war between Israel and Iran, the country was hit by more than 20,000 cyberattacks.
“In many cases, we managed to control the attacks, though we did suffer damage in some instances,” said Minister Sattar Hashemi during a speech to Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly on July 21.
Hashemi estimated the monthly damage to Iran’s digital economy at 15 trillion tomans (roughly equivalent to the annual budget of several ministries).
Referring to the shutdown of internet services during the war — which he called a “restriction” — Hashemi stated it was carried out at the discretion of “relevant intelligence and security authorities.” He added that the government attempted to compensate for the damage by allocating around $200,000 in resources.
