President Herzog was in Eilat Thursday night to celebrate the 74th anniversary of the day on which, during Israel’s war of independence in 1949, Israeli forces raised a makeshift flag painted with ink over the shore of the Red Sea in Eilat.
This iconic moment took place almost one year after Israel declared its independence and marked the establishment of Israeli sovereignty in the area that had been challenged by both Egypt and Jordan during the war.
“Happy to celebrate tonight in Eilat the 74th anniversary of the raising of the ‘ink flag’,” said President Herzog. “Eilat was like a wonderful gift to a newly born country. Today, the southernmost point of settlement has become a city and mother in Israel, with amazing beaches, bustling tourist areas, and cultural prosperity, and I am sure that wonderful days are ahead for her and us. Congratulations Eilat!”
