Editorial: How old Vatican and Islamic doctrines still shape their view of Israel today
For nearly two thousand years, the institutional Church promoted a doctrine that saw the Jewish people as rejected, punished, and condemned to eternal exile. According to this worldview, the Jews’ loss of their land was divine judgment, and they would clearly never again achieve sovereignty.
The Church declared itself the “New Israel,” replacing the Jewish people in God’s covenant. Islam itself did the same to both Judaism and Christianity.
This teaching shaped Europe for centuries. It justified discrimination, expulsions, anti-Jewish laws, and humiliation. At the core was a simple claim: the Jew must remain in exile to prove Christianity’s truth.
Then came 1948 — and everything changed.
