Elon Musk’s Grok artificial intelligence system assisted US forces in deploying more than 2,000 munitions against 2,000 separate Iranian targets within just 96 hours, according to a sworn statement submitted by a senior Pentagon official.
Cameron Stanley, the Pentagon’s chief digital and artificial intelligence officer, said Grok is one of only four AI systems currently capable of supporting US national-security operations—and one of three approved for mission-critical work in top-secret environments.
The disclosure emerged because the Trump administration is defending xAI against a lawsuit over the gas turbines powering its enormous data center in Southaven, Mississippi. The NAACP alleges that xAI is operating dozens of turbines without the environmental permits and pollution controls required by federal law.
The Justice Department has asked a federal judge to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that the continued operation and development of Grok is a matter of national security. Pentagon officials warned that restricting xAI’s data centers could severely damage US military capabilities during a future war or emergency.
