A US Navy spokesman said on Saturday that the US had sent a submarine capable of carrying up to 154 Tomahawk missiles to the Middle East, in what appeared to be a precautionary measure, towards Iran, following recent tensions.
"The purpose of deploying this submarine is to help ensure maritime security and stability in the region."
The US Fifth Fleet is patrolling the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow opening of the Persian Gulf through which 20% of all oil shipments pass.
The area under the responsibility of the 5th Fleet includes the Strait of Bab al-Mandab off Yemen, and the Red Sea, which extends to the Suez Canal.
Tomahawk missiles launched from ships or submarines can hit targets up to 2,500 kilometers (1,500 miles) away.
Despite the amazing military move, sending the "nuclear submarine" does not constitute a declaration of war and is not a threat to any country, according to political analyst Hassan Nimana.
Mennimana emphasized in an interview with the "Al-Hura" website that every American military move should be carried out within the framework of the changes taking place in the region and in the world, whether it is related to the Russian war against Ukraine or in the face of China's escalation.
