A girls’ school in Iran was reportedly hit during U.S.–Israel strikes. Within hours, major international outlets were reporting that the strike deliberately targeted the school and killed dozens of girls.
The sourcing cited across much of the coverage: Iranian state media and official regime channels.
But there are serious questions that did not make many headlines.
Pre-war assessments and open-source defense reporting had previously mapped the facility as a military installation. Anti-regime Iranian media identified it as a school intended for children of military personnel. TIME Magazine reported, citing a Canada-based Iranian teachers’ union representative, that the site had previously been used as a military facility before being converted into a school.
