Lebanese authorities have arrested two senior Hamas officials in the city of Sidon, marking what may be the first such move since the outbreak of the Al-Aqsa Flood operation.
According to the Al-Janoubia news site on Tuesday night, “Lebanese military intelligence detained two Hamas security operatives in Sidon.” The reasons for the arrests—whether political or security-related—were not disclosed.
Since the end of Israel’s military campaign in Lebanon on November 27, there has been increased political and security activity in the country related to Hamas and its weapons in Palestinian camps.
Israel has also carried out operations against Hamas members. On February 17, Hamas’s head of operations in Lebanon, Mohammad Shahin, was reportedly killed in an airstrike on his car near Sidon.
