Drunk recruits, insubordinate soldiers, and convicts are among hundreds of Russian soldiers sent to the most dangerous parts of the frontline in so-called Storm Z squads.
Echoing "punishment battalions" created by Josef Stalin for those soldiers who left their posts during the Second World War, Storm Z soldiers are treated like "just meat" by the Kremlin, one fighter from army unit 40318 said.
He told the Reuters agency that a commander ordered him not to provide medical treatment for wounded Storm Z fighters, while another said all but 15 of the 120 men in his unit were killed or wounded near the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut in June.
