Tehran University professor Foad Izadi told Iranian state TV that with both of Iran’s rivals armed with nukes, now might be the time for Tehran to scrap its current doctrine, leave the NPT, and openly pursue nuclear weapons.
Tehran University professor Foad Izadi said on an August 4, 2025, program on IRINN TV (Iran) that Iran has the opportunity to announce that its nuclear program has been destroyed and to reconsider its nuclear doctrine, given that Iran’s two rivals both possess nuclear weapons.
He questioned whether conventional weapons are sufficient to deter the United States.
Izadi added that developing nuclear weapons is not prohibited under international law unless a country is a member of the NPT, and that if Iran is not part of the NPT, there would be no legal problem.
