A new specialized force in the air force, nicknamed team 56, has been operating in the strip for the past ten months.
Made up of former flight-course graduates and elite soldiers who completed a full infantry track in the paratroopers, these combat officers return to the air domain after finishing officer training to serve inside the cooperation unit (the air force’s joint operations branch).
Their role: to act first and foremost as ground fighters who understand the fight, then communicate directly with aircraft to direct strikes with centimeter precision.
The idea grew out of the dismantling of the former “storm” air officers role. Unlike the past, when those fighters were embedded across regular brigades and used mainly in exercises, "Team 56" is a concentrated, attachable force — designed to join maneuvering units when complex air-ground coordination is required. The unit brings unique systems that connect them to control cells and pilots, plus dedicated equipment.
