Gaza woman evacuated to Italy dies of malnutrition, Israel says she had leukemia
A 20-year-old Gazan woman, Marah Abu Zouhri, who was recently evacuated to Italy for medical treatment, has died, with international media including the BBC and The Guardian reporting her cause of death as malnutrition. The case quickly became a symbol in global coverage of Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.
Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) responded, stressing that the reports left out a crucial detail: Abu Zouhri also suffered from leukemia.
COGAT said her evacuation could have taken place earlier, since Israeli authorities had offered multiple earlier dates for her transfer, but these were not taken up.
