On the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, President Trump signs an executive order mandating transparency for foreign funding sources, in parallel with transparency legislation advancing in Congress.
A symbolic bridge between modern antisemitism from Qatar and classical antisemitism.
U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order tightening accreditation procedures for institutions of higher education and requiring full transparency for foreign funding sources. The order mandates that institutions report all foreign funding and holds accrediting bodies responsible for monitoring compliance.
What does the order stipulate?
The order requires immediate and full disclosure of all foreign funding sources by higher education institutions. Trump instructed the Secretary of Education to revoke previous administration policies that allowed universities to conceal such information.
Additionally, universities must reveal both the origin and purpose of any funds received from foreign entities. Noncompliance may result in the loss of federal grants.
Background:
The order follows a lawsuit filed by Harvard University against the Trump administration, claiming the freezing of federal grants was unlawful. Harvard had refused the administration’s demands to scale back diversity initiatives and to strengthen its fight against antisemitism.
According to the BBC, the administration even canceled $400 million in funding for Columbia University, citing its failure to comply with the government's requirements regarding combating campus antisemitism.
