In a significant gesture toward preserving Jewish heritage and deepening ties with Israel, Ukraine has officially declared the grave of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov in Uman a national heritage site.

The decision ensures the site will receive the highest level of state protection afforded to landmarks of historical and cultural importance.

The designation, approved by Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers following a recommendation from the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communication, recognizes the grave as a monument of national significance.

Rabbi Nachman, founder of the Breslov Hasidic movement, is buried in Uman—a city that has become a major spiritual hub, especially during Rosh Hashanah, when tens of thousands of pilgrims, many from Israel, make the annual journey to pray at his tomb.

Ukraine’s Ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk, emphasized that the recognition reflects both the country’s commitment to its diverse cultural history and the years-long collaboration between Ukrainian authorities and international partners.

“This designation is more than symbolic,” Korniychuk said. “It acknowledges the enduring contribution of Jewish culture to Ukraine’s national identity and marks another step in preserving our country’s spiritual and cultural pluralism.”

The ambassador also highlighted the broader context of the move, noting the ongoing Russian invasion and its devastating impact on Ukrainian cultural landmarks.

“In these dark times, when Russia deliberately targets civilian infrastructure, including sites of religious and historical significance, Ukraine is making an intentional effort to safeguard places of deep cultural value,” Korniychuk said.

“We urge our international allies to support us in protecting this shared heritage from senseless destruction.”

For Breslover Hasidim, the grave of Rabbi Nachman holds immense spiritual importance. Before his death in 1810, the revered rabbi urged his followers to visit his grave on Rosh Hashanah, promising profound spiritual benefit to those who did so.

This call gave rise to one of the largest annual Jewish pilgrimages in the world, as tens of thousands travel to Uman each year to pray, sing, and reflect in accordance with his teachings.
