David Bedein and Dr. Arnon Gross warned that foreign-funded UNRWA education continues to use PA textbooks that glorify violent struggle instead of teaching peace.
Dr. Arnon Gross said the most dangerous finding in his review of Palestinian Authority schoolbooks is the absence of any real advocacy for peace with Israel. Instead, he said, the books call for “liberation” of all of Palestine, including Israel within the pre-1967 lines.
Gross presented examples from textbooks and teacher manuals that praise jihad, martyrdom and terrorists, including Dalal Mughrabi, who led the 1978 Coastal Road massacre. He said the conflict appears not only in history and geography books, but also in Arabic, mathematics, religion, social studies and other subjects.
Bedein emphasized that massive international funding continues to flow to UNRWA, with education receiving a major share. Gross proposed six reforms, including restoring Israel to maps, recognizing Jewish history and holy places, removing religious bigotry, restricting political demands to the 1967 lines, and using Arafat’s recognition letter to Rabin as the basis for teaching peaceful resolution.
