Saudi Arabia has halted the renovation of its embassy in Damascus, reinforcing the news of the faltering normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and the Syrian regime, Al-Mudun newspaper reported.
The Saudi Embassy is located in the eastern Mezze Villat neighborhood in Damascus, and in March 2023 the renovation works began.
Al-Modun newspaper quoted unnamed sources as saying that the renovation of the embassy had been stopped, without clarifying whether the renovation works were temporarily suspended or until further notice.
This was preceded by the news that Riyadh did not appoint an ambassador in Damascus, although it appointed new ambassadors in a number of countries in the world, so Riyadh passed the date set by sources close to the Syrian regime to open embassies and appoint diplomats, at the beginning of June 2023.
The relationship between Saudi Arabia and the Syrian regime largely overlaps the form of the relationship between Saudi Arabia and Iran, as indications of new tensions between Riyadh and Tehran have been revealed against the background of their dispute over the ownership of natural resources on the country's eastern border. An area divided between Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iran, which also includes a gas field.
A few days ago, the political analyst Rami Al-Khalifa Al-Ali, a professor of political philosophy at the University of Paris, wrote an article in the Saudi newspaper "Oqaz", in which he estimated that "the Arab efforts to solve the Syrian crisis are faltering."
Al-Ali stated in his article that "the Arab vision led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is based on the fact that the continuation of the situation as it is does not serve any of the parties, therefore the suffering of the Syrian people must end, and a peaceful solution to the crisis must be found."
In conclusion, according to what Al-Ali wrote, "Saudi Arabia, like the Arab countries that outlined a horizon for solving the Syrian crisis, made tremendous efforts and worked to convince the international community of the necessity of this solution, and that it has advantages in terms of politics, security and humanity, but if you don't help yourself , no one can help you."
In March, the Saudi newspaper Okaz reported on the Syrian regime's commitment to a package of reforms at the level of the internal situation and its relations with the Syrian opposition, in addition to Damascus' commitment not to be a source of Captagon exports to Jordan.
