YONI BEN MENACHEM -- Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shara (al-Julani) is currently under American and Israeli scrutiny following the violent events in the city of Sweida in southern Syria.
Senior security officials say that Al-Shara will have to face the consequences of his decisions regarding the handling of the clashes in Sweida and the involvement of regime forces in attacks on the Druze. They list several key mistakes:
A. Giving Israel reasons to intervene in the internal situation in Syria, and justifying continuing to guard the buffer zone it established and expanded in the Golan Heights region.
B. Al-Shara acted recklessly and without any presidential consideration. He ignored the fact that his regime was weak, declared war on the Sweida region, and deepened the sectarian divide between the central government and the Druze community.
