Ayatollah Ali Khamenei chose to make a public appearance on Ashoura, the Shiite day of mourning

(July 6, 2025 / JNS) Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday made his first public appearance since Israeli airstrikes targeted Iranian nuclear facilities, reemerging during the Shiite holy day of Ashura.

His appearance on the most sacred day of the Shiite calendar followed a period of seclusion that had fueled speculation about his health and grip on power.

The 86-year-old Khamenei had reportedly gone into hiding amid fears he could be targeted by the Israeli Air Force.
