Following significant losses among Iranian police forces, Basij members, and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps personnel in recent strikes attributed to Israel and the US, Tehran is increasingly relying on its regional proxy militias to maintain internal control.
Among the most prominent are the Afghan “Fatemiyoun Brigade” and Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), both well-known pro-Iranian militias that previously operated extensively in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon in support of Iran’s regional agenda.
These militias are now reportedly active inside Iran under two main operational frameworks: conducting armed patrols along borders, and enforcing internal “security” in urban areas. Their activities include preventing protests from spreading and carrying out operations against anti-regime elements, highlighting Tehran’s growing dependence on foreign-backed forces to stabilize the situation domestically.
