IRAN INTERNATIONAL -- Iranian state media claim that Israel bombed a Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) meeting in Tehran on June 16. However, an investigation by Iran International challenges the timeline and details of that report.
WHAT HAPPENED AND WHEN?
Fars News, affiliated with the IRGC, said the strike hit a meeting in western Tehran on the morning of June 16, injuring President Masoud Pezeshkian and others. But Iran International found no evidence of blasts that morning.
Instead, video evidence confirms missile strikes in western Tehran that afternoon, including at Shahid Bagheri Town. Social media posts and videos showed multiple blasts, likely targeting an IRGC facility in the Chitgar area.
WHO WAS TARGETED?
The reported meeting involved Iran’s top leaders: the president, judiciary chief, and parliament speaker. However, if it was truly a Supreme National Security Council meeting, additional top officials and military leaders, including IRGC commanders and Khamenei’s representatives, would have been present.
Ali Larijani, an advisor to Supreme Leader Khamenei, later confirmed that the SNSC was targeted in a plot to eliminate Iran’s leadership. Former IRGC commander Mohsen Rezaei also said six missiles hit the council meeting site but no one was killed.
WAS PRESIDENT PEZESHKIAN THE MAIN TARGET?
Unclear. Israeli analyst Danny Citrinowicz said Pezeshkian, a reformist, was unlikely to be the primary target. However, as SNSC chair, he may have been collateral in a strike aimed at Iran’s broader security leadership.
STATEMENTS BY NETANYAHU AND TRUMP
Shortly after the attack, Israeli PM Netanyahu told ABC News that striking Khamenei “would not escalate the conflict but end it.” Former U.S. President Trump abruptly left the G7 summit on June 16. Though Macron claimed it was related to Iran-Israel tensions, Trump denied this, calling it “much bigger.”
IRAN’S RESPONSE
Iran has opened a probe into the alleged assassination attempt, suspecting an inside agent. A senior Iranian official told Al Jazeera that the operation aimed to eliminate the president and other top leaders as part of an Israeli plan to topple the regime.
