Disagreements over the post of defense minister has lead to an impasse in coalition negotiations, with Netanyahu attempting to assuage concerns over the matter, asking his supporters for “a little patience.”
The Religious Zionist Party criticized the Biden administration on Wednesday after U.S. ambassador to Israel Thomas Nides implicitly warned Israeli Prime Minister-elect Benjamin Netanyahu against appointing party head Bezalel Smotrich as the next defense minister.
The faction said in a statement that while it has “a lot of respect and appreciation for our ally the United States, the Biden administration should also respect Israeli democracy and not interfere in the establishment of an elected government.”
