One of the most shocking, yet unknown, stories of the British Mandate is the murder of Alexander "Chaim" Rubowitz.
On May 6, 1947, Alexander, a 16-year-old member of the Lehi (Stern Group), was abducted by a British officer while hanging up Lehi posters in Jerusalem. The British initially denied involvement in the boy’s disappearance, but a hat found at the crime scene bearing the name of British officer Roy Farran proved otherwise. Eyewitnesses also confirmed seeing Alexander being forcibly stuffed into a van by men speaking English.
Major Farran was put on trial, but was not convicted due to a “lack of evidence.” Over 50 years later, classified documents were released revealing Farran’s confession to his superior officer Colonel Bernard Fergusson, who refused to testify at the trial. The confession described how Farran abducted Alexander, tortured him for information and then killed him, discarding his body on the side of the road.
Until this day, Farran has never convicted of his crime and Alexander's body has not been recovered.
May the memory of Alexander be a blessing.
