This week, Qatar replaced its entire security leadership, including the Minister of Defense, the Chief of Security Services, and the Chief of Staff. The previous Chief of Security Services was appointed Director of the Emir's Office. The Qataris did not explain the reason.
However, commentators in the Arab world have put forward a number of theories for the change in the security leadership. One of the explanations is that Qatar is preparing for significant regional security challenges and therefore wanted to inject "new blood" into its security leadership.
Another explanation heard is that Qatar is afraid that Israel will try to "settle accounts" with its leaders for years of hosting and funding Hamas, and therefore decided to appoint, among other things, a security official as the person closest to the emir.
Another interesting explanation is that the Qataris will soon begin to dismantle local networks related to Hamas and therefore appointed new personalities to take on the task. Another explanation is that there is a desire to "address" the Qatari prime minister to internal and economic issues and correct the "asymmetries" when he sits down for talks on the Gaza issue with the head of the CIA and the head of Egyptian intelligence.
