The Lebanese newspaper Al-Liwaa reported today that the US administration has issued an ultimatum to the Lebanese government, which it must fulfill within a month:
- Deploy the Lebanese army in all areas where it is required under the ceasefire agreement.
- Disarm Hezbollah.
- Disarm all other terrorist organizations in the country, including the Palestinians in the refugee camps.
According to the newspaper, if the demands are not met in full, the US will include Lebanon under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter and send international forces to enforce UN resolutions 1701 and 1559 in Lebanon.
ERAN MALKA ADDS:
- Chapter 7 of the UN Charter is titled: "Action with Respect to Threats to the Peace, Breaches of the Peace, and Acts of Aggression"
This chapter authorizes the UN Security Council to enforce the resolutions in the first instance by imposing sanctions and, if that fails, also by using force as a means of enforcing the implementation of the resolutions.
The interesting thing is that at the time of the adoption of Resolution 1701, it was not specified under which chapter of the UN Charter it was adopted, but it was explicitly stated that "the situation in Lebanon constitutes a threat to international peace and security."
