One year since Beepers operation: a rare move that reshaped geopolitics
Oded Eilam, former head of the Mossad’s counterterrorism division and now a researcher at the Jerusalem Center for Foreign Affairs and Security, reflects on the “Beepers” operation one year after it began.
He described it as an exceptionally rare intelligence mission that “created a new geopolitical reality, practically a different world architecture.”
Eilam compared it to a 1982 CIA covert operation that sabotaged the Soviet gas pipeline, dealing a heavy blow to Moscow’s economy.
On criticism over its timing, Eilam dismissed claims it should have been launched earlier. He argued the operation needed to trigger a chain of follow-up moves to achieve decisive momentum.
