The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley, has warned of the outbreak of a new world war due to the continuation of the Russian military operation in Ukraine.
Milley said today, Wednesday, to the House Armed Services Committee that the threats from Russia and China are still significant, according to CNN.
He stressed that the Russian attack on Ukraine is "the greatest threat to peace and security in Europe and perhaps in the whole world", but added that it "encourages" to see the world converge around Ukraine.
The senior military official added, "We are entering a world that has become more turbulent, and the possibility of a major international conflict is rising, not diminishing."
"The Russian attack on Ukraine threatens to undermine not only the peace and stability in Europe, but the peace and global stability that my father and a generation of Americans have fought so hard to protect," Milley added.
The Chief of Staff defended the US position in the face of the war and the flow of American weapons to Ukraine.
He noted that Washington supports the establishment of American bases in the Eastern European countries NATO members, but wants to avoid placing troops there on a regular basis, and prefers to deploy them on a temporary basis.
Australia warns of war with China
Australian Defense Secretary Peter Dutton has warned that "war with China is possible".
Dutton explained that "the acceleration in the Australian military's armament with long-range missiles and the increase in the military budget was caused by the war in Ukraine, and the danger that totalitarian regimes constitute to free democracies around the world," according to the Daily Mail.
"Australia's fighter jets and naval vessels will be armed with new long-range assault missiles years ahead of schedule, to deter the growing threat from China," he added.
