In the early morning hours of June 24, a series of mysterious drone strikes targeted sensitive military sites across Iraq, including radar systems and air force basesโsignaling a dangerous escalation that could threaten the country's defense infrastructure.
According to informed sources, one of the targets was an Iraqi military radar system of the AN/TPS-77 model, a U.S.-made long-range radar capable of covering up to 470 kilometers. The nature of the attack is still unclear.
Authorities confirmed the attacks were carried out by drones, but the identity of the perpetrators remains unknown. No further official details have been released.
Another radar system of the same model was also reportedly attacked in Dhi Qar province near Nasiriyah, also by a drone. It is still unknown whether the radar was destroyed.
The attacks were not limited to radar systems. The Balad Airbase in Salah al-Din province was also targeted, where a drone crashed in an open area near a fortified ammunition storage site used for Iraqi F-16 fighter jets. No casualties or significant damage were reported.

Similar drone strikes were reported on the Imam Ali Airbase in Nasiriyah and the Taji Airbase north of Baghdad—indicating a broader and more coordinated campaign against Iraq’s military infrastructure.
As of now, the Iraqi government and Ministry of Defense have not issued any official statement, while investigations are underway to determine the origin of the drones and those responsible for the coordinated attacks.
