Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is poised to lose his position as Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate, reverting to Minority Leader following the 2024 election.
His support for President Biden’s maximum-migration policy, which brought in about nine million migrants, has been blamed for significant Democratic losses, including the defeat of Vice President Kamala Harris and the loss of three Senate seats, resulting in a Republican majority.
This marks the second time Schumer's support for mass migration has cost him the Majority Leader role; he faced similar consequences in 2014 due to the fallout from President Obama's immigration policies. Despite the pattern, Schumer returned to advocating for mass migration in 2022, disregarding past electoral failures.
Democratic senators are now criticizing the immigration strategy, calling it "political malpractice." Meanwhile, Schumer's ties to wealthy donors in New York, who benefit from an influx of low-wage migrants, complicate the party's stance. These donors, including those behind FWD.us, have historically supported pro-migration initiatives that have not yielded the expected political gains.
The recent election results reflect a broader backlash against the Democrats' immigration policies, pushing many swing voters toward Trump. As a result, Schumer's strategy has ultimately cost him control of the Senate for the second time.
