Switzerland’s top military commander says the country is currently unprepared to withstand large-scale attacks and warns that neutrality alone will not guarantee security.
Thomas Süssli, commander of the Swiss Armed Forces, has issued a stark warning that Switzerland is presently incapable of defending itself against major attacks or a large-scale war. He stressed that the evolving European security environment means Switzerland cannot assume it would remain untouched in a broader conflict, adding that Russia also poses a potential threat to the country.
Süssli criticized the prevailing public mood in Switzerland, saying many citizens still feel detached from the war in Ukraine and that the conflict has failed to create a sufficient sense of urgency about national defense. He also challenged the widespread belief that Switzerland’s long-standing neutral status alone would shield it from military aggression, warning that neutrality without credible military readiness offers little real protection.
