Is a crisis looming in Qatar’s relations with the European Union, or is Qatar trying to scare the Europeans?
Qatar is warning that it will stop exporting gas to the European Union if the bloc’s countries impose penalties on it under recently adopted sustainability due diligence legislation, Qatari Energy Minister Saad Sharida al-Kaabi said.
The EU’s due diligence directive, which came into effect in July, allows for fines of up to 5% of a company’s annual global revenue (in this case, state-owned Qatar Energy) if its management fails to comply with human rights (e.g., labor conditions) or environmental impacts.
