Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville is warning that the Democratic Party may need a formal “schism” after several far-left, Mamdani-backed candidates won primary races in New York.

Carville said he “can’t be in the same party” as candidates he believes are hostile to the American flag, mainstream Democratic politics, and Israel’s right to exist. He argued that Democrats can and should debate Israeli government policy — but that denying the legitimacy of the State of Israel crosses a line.

His comments came after Democratic socialist candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier and other candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani scored primary victories, raising fears among establishment Democrats that the party is drifting further left ahead of November.
