China’s naval presence off the coast of Iran and in the Gulf of Oman is currently based on a relatively small but high-quality task force, designed both to demonstrate presence and to collect real-time intelligence.
CHINA’S NAVAL ORDER OF BATTLE (FEBRUARY 2026)
- “Maritime Security Belt 2026” exercise: China is taking part in a joint naval drill with Iran and Russia in the northern Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Oman.
- Force composition: The Chinese contingent typically includes an advanced destroyer (such as a Type 052D), a frigate or escort vessel, and a multi-purpose supply ship.
- Permanent task force: China routinely maintains Task Force 46 (or 47, depending on rotation) in the Gulf of Aden, consisting of missile destroyers and frigates capable of rapidly redeploying toward Iranian waters if required.
