EXPLAINING YEMEN: The division of the country and who backs who

NEWSRAEL: Many of our readers have asked for a summary of the situation in Yemen. Here it is!

Yemen’s war began in 2014, when the Houthis—an Iran-backed Shi’ite movement from northern Yemen—captured the capital Sana’a and pushed out the internationally recognized government.

In 2015, Saudi Arabia formed a military coalition to restore the government and stop Iranian expansion on the Arabian Peninsula.

But the anti-Houthi camp has never been unified. The biggest internal split is between:
