The ancient Orthodox tradition of the “Holy Fire” was observed today at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, under tight security and a solemn atmosphere.
According to centuries-old belief, a divine flame miraculously emerges from the tomb of Jesus each year on Holy Saturday, the day before Orthodox Easter. The fire is passed among worshipers and then distributed to Orthodox Christian communities around the world, including in Russia, Greece, Serbia, and Romania.
This year, Palestinian Christian communities chose to limit the celebrations to religious services only, citing the ongoing war in Gaza. Despite the somber tone, thousands of faithful gathered in and around the Old City, and the ceremony proceeded peacefully with extensive police presence ensuring public order.
