Senior White House officials fear that New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan may have obtained audio recordings of highly sensitive discussions held inside the White House Situation Room.
According to Axios, the suspicion arose after published excerpts from the reporters’ forthcoming book included detailed, nearly verbatim accounts of meetings concerning the Iran war and the Epstein files. President Donald Trump is reportedly furious over the disclosures.
The journalists conducted more than 1,000 interviews, and the conversations may have been reconstructed from participants’ recollections, notes or official transcripts.
The book, “Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump,” is scheduled for publication on June 23. Any unauthorized recording inside the Situation Room would represent an extraordinary security breach, as independent phones and recording devices are strictly prohibited.
