Two years after Mohammed Deif was eliminated, new details are emerging about the escape route taken by the head of Hamas’s military wing and the advice he received from Ezz al-Din al-Haddad, who would later become his successor.
Hamas sources told the Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat that Deif was in Gaza City when Hamas launched the October 7, 2023 massacre. He reportedly remained there for several days before Israel established control over the Netzarim Corridor, separating Gaza City and the northern Gaza Strip from the south.
According to the sources, Deif left Gaza City alone in November 2023, without a personal bodyguard, and headed toward Rafah. Contact with him was lost for more than four days after he failed to locate one of the people who was supposed to transport him and decided to change his escape route.
