Egypt sees the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam as a danger as both countries come closer to "Water War" in Africa
A military delegation from Cairo visited Mogadishu earlier this week to coordinate Egypt’s participation as a troop-contributing nation. According to a UN Security Council report published in April 2025, Egypt plans to send around 1,100 soldiers to AUSSOM.
The move comes amid rising tensions with Ethiopia following the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam last month — which Cairo views as a direct threat to its water security.
Ethiopia currently contributes about 2,500 troops to AUSSOM. The mission, which replaced the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) at the start of the year, is set to continue until 2028.
