Spain’s socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has taken another controversial step against both Israel and the United States, ordering the closure of Spanish airspace to US military aircraft involved in operations against Iran.
The decision goes even further than Madrid’s earlier refusal to allow US forces to use jointly operated bases in Spain.
Defense Minister Margarita Robles confirmed the move, stating that Spain will not permit the use of either its bases or its airspace for any actions tied to the conflict with Iran.
The restriction forces US military aircraft to reroute around NATO-member Spain, complicating operations in the Middle East. While emergency situations are technically exempt, the message from Madrid is clear: Spain is actively distancing itself from its Western allies during a critical moment.
