The Jordanian elite is furious with the Hamas leadership for what it sees as an attempt to destabilize the kingdom.ย
Since the beginning of the month of Ramadan, the only place where Hamas has succeeded in igniting a fire of popular protests is Jordan, where the authorities fear a loss of control after massive nightly demonstrations have been held for a week near the Israeli embassy compound in the capital Amman.
The Jordanians accuse that this is the result of "incitement" on the part of Hamas leaders. Mainly angry about a speech given by senior Hamas official Khaled Mashal via video calling on Jordanians to take to the streets "in millions" against the backdrop of the war in the Gaza Strip.
The spokesman for the Jordanian government, Mahand Mabidin, stated today that any attempt to incite against the Jordanian state is a "desperate attempt designed to sway our conscience and divert our focus."
He hinted that Hamas is trying to gain popularity despite the destruction it has brought to Gaza.
"Jordan is a sovereign country and has its own constitutional authority...when King Abdullah II is at the forefront of the Arab position, we do not look at those who want to gain popularity on the ruins of the destruction that occurred in Gaza as a result of this devastating war."
