Ahmed Jama Shire, who has served in recent years as the diplomatic representative of Somaliland in South Africa, says that Israel’s recognition marks a historic moment for his people after decades of international isolation.
Speaking following the announcement, Shire said: “I deeply appreciate the government of Israel, the prime minister, and the people of Israel.
For 35 years, the people of Somaliland have been waiting to begin the path toward international recognition, and today that journey started with the government of Israel.” He added that celebrations are taking place across the territory, including in the capital, Hargeisa, and other cities.
According to Shire, the relationship launched today is built on broad cooperation. “The partnership is based on security, the economy, education, and many other sectors,” he said, describing the move as a foundation for long-term strategic ties.
